After the COVID-19 lockdown, we all know what it is like to be lonely. Senior citizens are particularly vulnerable to this loneliness, especially when they don’t have a strong family support system. At Care Cardinal, we want to combat loneliness and these are three ways that we build a sense of community at our senior living center.

1. Get to Know Your Neighbors

A 2020 global study found that if you get to know as few as six of your neighbors, you are less at risk for depression and social anxiety. You don’t have to get to know your neighbors through grand gestures. A simple “hello” or a wave can reduce feelings of loneliness. Even though it is a small gesture, it is still a form of connection with another person.

2. Get Involved in Your Community

What is your unique talent or special skill? If you enjoy singing, join the sing-alongs or church services at Care Cardinal. If you have a green thumb, there are opportunities to garden. If you’re an artist, join our painting courses. There are many ways to get involved within your neighborhood, but you can also volunteer with the larger community outside of Care Cardinal. Volunteering is a great way to help seniors feel active and it can offer them an opportunity to make new friends.

3. Get Active

Having an active mind and body is crucial for your mental and physical health. Finding the motivation to get active is not always easy but staying active does not have to involve strenuous exercise. Simple activities such as joining a walking group, working on a puzzle, or simply sitting outside with a book helps senior citizens stay active.

Creating Communities in a Senior Living Community

About 1/3 of all seniors live by themselves which puts them at risk of isolation. Senior living centers, such as Care Cardinal, give seniors a sense of community and new opportunities to socialize and interact with other senior citizens.
